Chandigarh, Jun 24 (PTI) The Chandigarh administration has sought the intervention of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to stop the auction of heritage furniture linked to the Union Territory scheduled to be held in Paris on June 25.
In a letter to the MEA, a copy of which was released to the media on Wednesday, the administration said two furniture items listed for auction carry markings indicating that they belong to Panjab University and PGIMER, Chandigarh. Officials said the markings raise concerns that the items may have been removed and taken abroad without authorisation.
The administration said the furniture is part of Chandigarh’s architectural heritage associated with a renowned architect and forms an important element of the city’s
modernist legacy.
It said that Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site and that the preservation of original furniture linked to the city is of national and international importance.
The administration expressed concern that the appearance of such furniture in an overseas auction could point to theft, illegal removal or unauthorised export of heritage property. It warned that the auction could lead to the permanent loss of assets connected with Chandigarh’s historic identity.
Chandigarh Police has registered two FIRs in connection with the matter and started an investigation into the alleged theft, illegal removal, export and sale of the furniture.
The administration requested the MEA to take up the issue with the Indian Embassy in France and French authorities.
It has sought suspension of the auction, verification of ownership records, preservation of the furniture during the investigation and assistance in recovering and bringing the items back to India.
The administration said it would provide all necessary records and documentation to support efforts for the recovery of the heritage assets. PTI VSD MNK MNK
