The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has provided a big update on Ajit Agarkar’s future as chairman of the BCCI’s senior men’s selection committee. Amid reports of Agarkar losing his job to former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel, Saikia has stated that the board still has 15 days to decide on Agarkar’s future.
“We still have 15 days to go. 15 days is a long time in the world of cricket. We will take a decision in appropriate time and we will let you know about it. Today, there was no discussion on any individual,” Saikia said when asked about Ajit Agarkar’s future as chairman of selectors.
While there has been reports of Agarkar’s growing distance with the BCCI on issues related to fitness and scheduling
going into the 2027 ODI World Cup, conjectures grew after he remained absent from the all important BCCI Review Meeting of the England tour.
With New Zealand series (A and Senior team) starting in a month’s time, BCCI need to take a decision and a lot of former players feel that for the sake of continuity and team’s white ball performance over last three years, Agarkar should be allowed to continue.
However there is a faction that wants to replace him but as of now, the BCCI is yet to find a name of stature who could fit in the role of chairman of selectors going into a World Cup year when sensitive decisions like future of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could be taken.
Agarkar was appointed as India’s chief selector in 2023 and he has been in the role for more than three years now.
During his time as India’s chief selector, Agarkar has picked Indian teams that finished as runners-up in ODI World Cup 2023 and won T20 World Cup titles in 2024 and 2026, ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and Asia Cup titles in 2023 and 2025.
Saikia’s reaction on Agarkar’s extension came hours after it was reported that the BCCI’s office-bearers have been given the authority to decide whether Agarkar continues as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee or is replaced after his current term ends on October 4.
