A drone crashed into a residential apartment building in Galați, Romania, in the early hours of Friday, causing an explosion and sparking a fire that led to a major emergency response.
Romanian emergency authorities said the drone hit the apartment block at around 2 AM.
The blast triggered panic among residents in the surrounding area, with authorities later confirming that the fire broke out in an apartment on the 10th floor after the drone crashed into the residential block. Video from the scene shows a powerful explosion erupting from the upper floors of the apartment.
The two occupants of the apartment managed to evacuate on their own before rescue teams reached the scene. Officials said both sustained abrasions and were treated by medical
personnel at the location.

The Galați Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU) later confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and stated that no other drones had been detected in the area so far.
Authorities also sent an RO-ALERT warning to residents after the incident.
“A short time ago, in the municipality of Galați, a drone crashed into a block of flats, the impact being followed by an explosion and the outbreak of a fire in an apartment located on the 10th floor,” ISU Galați said in a statement.
Emergency teams from the ISU, SMURD, the County Ambulance Service, and police units were dispatched to the site to secure the area and contain the aftermath of the crash.
Romanian authorities said a specialised investigative unit dealing with explosions was en route to the scene. The team includes officers from the Criminal Investigation Department along with forensic specialists from the Romanian Police’s National Institute of Forensics.
Personnel from Romania’s intelligence and security agencies also took part in the response operation.
Early reports indicated the drone could have been Russian, though authorities have not officially confirmed where the aircraft originated.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The crash comes amid rising concerns over increased Russian drone activity near Romania’s border with Ukraine. Romania shares roughly 400 miles of border with Ukraine and lies along the Black Sea and Danube River region, placing areas of the country close to locations repeatedly targeted in Russian drone and missile attacks.
According to figures provided by Romania’s Defence Ministry to ABC News, Russian strikes near the NATO frontier have intensified in recent months. The ministry said the attacks have led to more NATO air policing missions, repeated breaches of allied airspace by Russian drones, and the discovery of munition debris on Romanian territory.
