As the nation observes the seventh anniversary of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack on Saturday, one of the deadliest strikes on security forces in recent history, authorities have heightened security across Jammu and Kashmir.
Security forces conducted extensive checks in Srinagar and other parts of the Union Territory. In the commercial hub of Lal Chowk, police teams conducted surprise inspections at hotels on Friday, verifying guests’ identification documents and examining their luggage. Similar vigilance measures were reported from Kulgam and other districts, with the region placed on high alert.

All About Pulwama Terror Attack
On February 14, 2019, a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Pulwama district, killing 40 personnel and injuring many others. The attack sent shockwaves across the country and triggered a sharp escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan.
In response to the attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) launched multiple aerial strikes on February 26, 2019, targeting Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camps in Balakot, Pakistan. The pre-dawn strikes were described as having caused significant damage to terror infrastructure.
The following day, heightened tensions led to aerial engagements after Pakistan attempted to target Indian military installations in Jammu and Kashmir. During the air combat, Abhinandan Varthaman, flying a MiG-21 Bison, chased Pakistani jets across the Line of Control. His jet was subsequently shot down in Pakistan-administered territory, and he was taken into custody. India also reported downing a Pakistani fighter aircraft during the confrontation. After diplomatic efforts, Abhinandan was released and returned to India a few days later.
