Shekhar Suman Criticizes Modern Stand-Up Scene, Says ‘Comedy Has Gone Towards Vulgarity’

Shekhar Suman recently shared his views about the current state of stand-up comedy, and criticized the growing use of abusive language and vulgar humour in online content. Known for judging popular comedy reality shows such as The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and Comedy Circus, the actor reflected on how comedy has evolved over the years during a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble. He slammed young comedians who rely on ‘abusive’ and ‘obscene’ language to make audiences laugh. Meanwhile, Shekhar Suman has returned with a new talk show titled ‘Shekhar Tonite’ and the first episode dropped on YouTube recently.

Shekhar Suman Slams Young Stand-Up Comedians

According to Shekhar Suman, comedy has increasingly moved towards obscenity and double-meaning jokes, which he believes stems from

a lack of creativity and thoughtful writing. He told Bollywood Bubble, “It is forced now; it was simple earlier. The comedians were also good, and had fresh thinking. Comedy has gone towards vulgarity now. It’s obscene. There are double meaning, double standards now. This change came because people stopped thinking. Till the time you don’t think, read or don’t create anything new, then you will only end up stealing jokes from here and there, presenting in a different way.”

Referring to comedy content on YouTube, Shekhar said that much of it is filled with abusive language, adding that some performers wrongly assume audiences find such humour ‘cool.’ “Earlier, there were also television serials that were funny, like Dekh Bhai Dekh and Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, they had brilliant writing and scripting. But now, that entire thinking and approach has vanished. Comedians are only focused on making people laugh with a cluster of jokes and punch lines from here and there, it’s an easy way out,” he said.

When asked if any young comedians currently impress him, Shekhar avoided naming anyone specifically and said both good and bad performers have their own audience today. He added that visibility and popularity are ultimately decided by viewers.
