Since taking charge as the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner, the 2005-batch IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe has led an intense state-wide crackdown on food adulteration and safety violations.
During his first 100 days in the role, his enforcement teams executed exactly 904 raids across Maharashtra.
WHEN DID TUKARAM MUNDHE TAKE CHARGE AS FDA CHIEF?
Tukaram Mundhe took charge as the Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on May 25. This marked his 25th transfer in 21 years of service as an IAS officer. Mundhe has been in charge as the FDA chief for 104 days, counting from the day he assumed office on May 25 up to September 6. Following his takeover, he initiated a massive statewide crackdown on food safety, unhygienic eateries, and adulterated products.
TUKARAM MUNDHE’S REPORT CARD: THE 100-DAY CRACKDOWN
Authorities uncovered and seized fake, mislabeled, and non-compliant food products worth ₹34.7 crore. This included major black-market operations handling fake paneer, adulterated milk, misbranded cooking oils, and hazardous synthetic dyes.
The aggressive campaign resulted in 457 arrests and the immediate sealing of 322 non-compliant establishments.
The inspections did not spare prominent names, reaching major retail outlets, popular eateries, IIT Bombay, and even uncovering unlicensed kitchens operating inside the Bombay High Court canteen.
The momentum has only grown since then. By September 2026, theFDA has issued notices to 12,083 entities within 4 months, targeting critical issues like poor hygiene, lack of trained manpower, and compromised raw materials, say reports.
When questioned about the massive public attention surrounding his aggressive enforcement, Mundhe stated that he is “no celebrity” and is simply doing his duty to protect public health.

Systematic Festival Surveillance: Instead of reacting randomly to spikes in food adulteration during major celebrations, Mundhe institutionalized a year-round, festival-neutral framework. This moves enforcement from erratic, last-minute crackdowns to structured, 360-degree seasonal timelines that cover community meals (like Langar, Bhandara, and Mahaprasad), ensuring public safety without disrupting religious traditions.
Shifting the Focus to Medicines: Recognising that public health is an intersection of what goes onto plates and into medicine cabinets, Mundhe is aggressively expanding the FDA’s focus from food safety to the pharmaceutical sector. The new roadmap actively targets substandard and spurious drugs, misleading medical advertisements, and strict supply-chain quality control.
Transparency and Social Support: By making day-to-day inspection findings public—often sharing graphic realities of unhygienic kitchens and storage spaces directly with the populace—he has turned food safety into a broad public awareness movement. Despite intense political and administrative pressure that has historically resulted in frequent transfers throughout his career, his uncompromising approach has garnered massive public trust and support.
