New measures have been adopted at Terminal 2 of the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru. The move came after the authorities grew alert to the chronic congestion and unauthorised cab operations at the Terminal 2 arrivals pick-up area. Previously, the airport officials had implemented overstay charges at the kerbsides to manage the congestion.
Airport visitors can note the detailed system put in place by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), ensuring fast tag-enabled entry and exit at gates. A time limit has been set for private vehicles, along with the creation of a special diversion for commercial yellow-board taxis.
Separation Of Vehicles At Terminal 2
The Terminal 2 arrivals floor, also called Level 0, now has designated
lanes for different vehicles. While the first few lanes are dedicated to authorised cabs such as Ola, Uber and government-run airport taxis, subsequent sections of the arrivals floor have been reserved for private white-board vehicles.
According to Deccan Herald, a BIAL spokesperson spoke about the new system and said it is aimed at enhancing passenger safety and easing congestion caused by unauthorised drivers and their associates. These often operate at airport premises and block lanes for extended periods.
The eight-minute limit for private vehicles is an increase on the five-minute limit seen in many international airports. The officials aim to encourage discipline among travellers while discouraging unauthorised waiting.
Similar Rules On T1 From Dec 13
BIAL officials have confirmed that similar regulations will be extended to Terminal 1 from Saturday, December 13, where travellers fly on domestic carriers like IndiGo. The time-limit regulations will apply to T1 with a slight tweak, however. Since T1 has a shorter arrival lane, the time calculation will begin 80 metres from the pick-up points.
Traffic police and barricades will be deployed at the road bifurcation leading to T1 and T2 to ensure segregation. It will help divert all yellow-board taxis to designated parking areas.
Police personnel have been deployed in the vicinity of T2 to ensure compliance with the new rules. No backlash or protest from drivers has come to note yet. A section of private taxi drivers has reportedly raised concerns that the time limit would not be sufficient for them to pick up the passengers and their luggage.
