Pete Davidson can’t stop gushing about Eddie Murphy and we absolutely get it. The comedian, in a recent chat, opened up about his sweet bond with the Hollywood legend, calling him an inspiration since
his childhood.
In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, Davidson shared how he has been Murphy’s fan since the age of five or six. “I’ve been an Eddie Murphy fan since I was five or six years old when my mom bought me Delirious from FYE,” Davidson recalled, referring to his mother, Amy Waters Davidson and Eddie Murphy’s stand-up comedy television special from 1983.
He added, “She thought it was another Eddie Murphy movie, and then I just fell in love with stand-up.”
Similar Paths
Interestingly, both Davidson and Murphy share strikingly similar paths. They joined Saturday Night Live at a young age with Murphy at 19 and Davidson at 20. Moreover, both lost their fathers early in life and decided to turn pain into punchlines. “And we just have a lot of similarities in our personal lives too. Our fathers both passed when we were young, and it’s why we got into comedy,” Davidson said.
Pete Davidson continued, “I’ve been in this business a long time, and it’s nice to get advice from people but no one gets it more than him, just in an age timeline. I’m not saying I did the same things as him, because he was infinitely more talented and did way more.”
Pete Davidson And Eddie Murphy’s Collaboration
That connection deepened when the two teamed up for the new Amazon MGM action-comedy The Pickup. Davidson, however, still can’t believe he got the chance to work with his childhood hero. In his words, “If ten-year-old Pete knew this would happen, he’d be like, ‘Oh my God!”
As for his experience of filming with the legendary star, he said, “Eddie’s the G.O.A.T. There’s Eddie Murphy, and then there’s the rest. He’s the reason for everything.”
Now streaming on Prime Video, The Pickup brings together an intriguing mix of comedic talent including Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer and Eva Longoria. The film is directed by Tim Story, best known for Barbershop and Ride Along. It promises sharp humour, fast-paced chases and star-powered charisma that has fans hooked to it ever since its premiere on the OTT platform.
