A silent war is being waged on the Internet, and the two opponents happen to be online encyclopedias. For those who have been away from the web for a minute, SpaceX and Tesla chief Elon Musk recently dropped
Grokipedia, a rival to popular Wikipedia, powered by in-house xAI chatbot Grok. In late September, Musk announced X, informing the folks about a Wikipedia alternative which would be a “massive improvement” over its counterpart. Fast forward a few weeks, and people can now access the information platform, and they have differing opinions about Musk’s offering.
Wikipedia, on the other hand, has been written and maintained by humans for the past couple of decades or so. Wikipedia claims to be the “largest and most-read reference work in history. Wikipedia functions on donations, something that Musk has openly criticised in the past by questioning the source of funds being a non-profit entity.
We have picked a few top posts on X that appear when one types “Grokipedia” in the search box. The reactions to Musk’s AI-driven encyclopedia have been mixed, creating a divide on the Musk-owned website.
Carbon Copy?
Those who tried Grokipedia noticed Musk’s platform mimicked the formatting and structure of Wikipedia. In the following example, a user on X searched the topic of “Miller Effect” and shared screenshots of what the two platforms offered.

Changing Narrative?
Another top post on Musk’s X platform seemed to shed light on Grokipedia’s alleged bias and voice on controversial historical figures and events.

Note the difference between Wikipedia's first paragraph on George Floyd compared to the first paragraph from Grokipedia. The nuance and detail on Grokipedia is FAR superior to Wikipedia and is clearly not pushing any ideologies, unlike Wikipedia. Corrections like this are… pic.twitter.com/NoTnLq2pxe

“I’m Impressed”
Those who were in the Grokipedia camp praised the information platform for its “factual” and “unbiased” approach to topics.
“I will literally never use Wikipedia again. Grokipedia is clearly much more factual and unbiased, and easier to read source documents,” a user opined.
Wikipedia: "conspiracy theorists claim COVID-19 leaked from a lab"
Grokipedia: "experts are split, here are the sources for the house report on the lab leak and the scientific sentiment studies"
Wow! I'm genuinely incredibly impressed.

“Non-judgemental”
A user on X compared the definition of “Bitcoin”, and it attracted several responses. Grokipedia’s approach was factual and direct, many remarked in the comments.

Grokipedia Vs Wikipedia
As it turns out, Wikipedia already has a page ready on Grokipedia. (Kindly note: Wikipedia articles are dynamic as they are constantly edited and updated.)
“Grokipedia is a free online encyclopedia reportedly made by the AI model Grok, launched by Elon Musk’s company xAI. It was created as a means to address the lack of a truly neutral encyclopedia in the internet as said by Musk because he believes that Wikipedia has a left-wing bias,” Wikipedia introduced its rival.
“Grokipedia officially started on October 27, 2025. The cofounder of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger, supported the project, however criticized its tendency to hallucinate. As of October 2025, Grokipedia has about 885,000 articles and counting. Some people have said that many of its pages are ‘adapted’ from Wikipedia.Unlike Wikipedia, users cannot make edits,” an excerpt on Grokipedia’s “background” read.

Amusingly, the article on Grokipedia published on Wikipedia features a “Related Pages” tab that includes an article about “Criticism of Wikipedia”.
“Wikipedia editors know that the site should not be used as a primary source for research. A librarian, whose name is Philip Bradley, said Wikipedia does not have authority. For a printed encyclopedia, the people writing it have to make sure the information is correct, or they could lose their job,” read an excerpt on “Critics of Wikipedia”.
Elon Musk On Grokipedia
Musk, the creator of Grokipedia, is aiming for the moon and Mars.
Grokipedia will exceed Wikipedia by several orders of magnitude in breadth, depth and accuracy https://t.co/Nt4M6vqEZu

“Nice work by the @xAI team on Grokipedia.com! The goal here is to create an open source, comprehensive collection of all knowledge. Then place copies of that etched in a stable oxide in orbit, the Moon and Mars to preserve it for the future. Foundation,” a pinned post on Musk’s X profile read.
