Bhubaneswar, Jul 21 (PTI) Heavy showers in Odisha caused waterlogging in several cities on Tuesday and forced the Hirakud dam authority to open 10 gates, with no respite in sight as the weather department predicted the rains to continue for another five days.
Sonepur was the wettest place in the state as it recorded 58 mm of rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, followed by Keonjhar (45.7 mm), Rourkela (36.3 mm), Bolangir (35.5 mm), Cuttack (30.2 mm), and Bhubaneswar (14.2 mm).
Due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi river, the Hirakud dam authority opened 10 gates to discharge excess water, officials said.
They have alerted 12 districts downstream of the reservoir about possible inundation.
The India Meteorological Department
said heavy rain will continue in several parts of Odisha for another five days.
Heavy rainfall is expected in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts on Wednesday, while thunderstorm is expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda, it said.
Light to moderate rain would occur in many other places across the state on July 21, and might continue till July 26. PTI BBM BBM NSD
