In what might come as a big boost for Mumbai, star India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal might play in one Vijay Hazare Trophy match before the end of the year, after recovering from acute gastroenteritis, which had initially thrown his participation into doubt, according to a report in The Times of India.
As per the report, Jaiswal could turn out for Mumbai in their Vijay Hazare Trophy clash against Chhattisgarh on December 29 and feature in the games that follow.
Jaiswal was hospitalised in Pune with acute gastroenteritis after Mumbai’s last Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy match against Rajasthan.
Earlier reports indicate that India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and all-rounder Shivam Dube will also feature for Mumbai in their Vijay Hazare Trophy league
games in Jaipur on January 6 and 8.
Meanwhile, 1983 World Cup hero Dilip Vengsarkar expressed surprise at Jaiswal’s exclusion from India’s T20 World Cup team, highlighting his brilliant white-ball performances and consistent domestic form in recent seasons.
Despite playing match-winning knocks in the IPL and demonstrating the ability to dominate bowling attacks at the top, Jaiswal has struggled to string together consistent performances in T20Is, which seems to have counted against him in the selection race.
Vengsarkar voiced serious concern over Jaiswal’s continued exclusion from India’s plans, emphasising that consistent performances across formats make it hard to justify leaving out a proven match-winner.
“It is unfortunate that Yashasvi is being left out time and again for no fault of his. He has been in tremendous form across all formats of the game and I don’t know what else he has to do to get into the team,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by PTI.
“Nobody should leave a match-winner out of the team,” the former Indian cricketer added.
Commenting on the selections of Gill and Jaiswal, Vengsarkar offered a balanced perspective, supporting the selectors’ focus on current form.
