Smartphone maker Lava International on Saturday condoled the deaths of Indian tourists in a boat mishap near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, saying it was in touch with the Indian Embassy and would extend support to those affected and their families.
This came after a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members capsized 400 metres from shore while travelling from Hon May Rut Island. Local authorities rescued 21 people from the overturned boat, while 15 Indian tourists – two women and 13 men – were confirmed dead.
Lava Mobiles said the incident involved some of its channel partners and team members.
“We are in constant touch with the Embassy of India in Vietnam and the local authorities to gather information about the safety and well-being
of our people. Our immediate priority is to extend all possible support to those affected and their families. Our teams in both India and Vietnam are in regular contact with the families and are providing all possible assistance,” it said on X.

Notably, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam have set up a control room in Ho Chi Minh City to assist affected families. “We are awaiting further updates from the authorities and will continue to provide timely information as it becomes available to us,” said Lava Mobiles.
Notably, many of the tourists involved in the boat mishap were employees and distributors of Lava Mobiles. The Indian Express reported that many of the deceased are believed to be from Andhra Pradesh.
Founded in 2009, Lava Mobiles manufactures smartphones, tablets, computer hardware and other electronics. A total of three boats went to Vietnam with employees and distributers of the company.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh minister Nara Lokesh held a meeting with the Ministry of External Affairs and is closely monitoring the situation, according to his office. The Telangana government has also established a control room following the capsizing of a boat carrying Indian tourists, including people from Telangana, near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam.
