Gujarat Titans registered a thumping 89 run win over Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday in the IPL 2026 encounter between the sides to virtually cement their spot in the top-2 of the playoff race.
GT posted a mammoth total of 229 riding on half-centuries from Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, before bundling CSK out for 140 as Mohammed Siraj, Rashid Khan and Kariso Rabada logged three-fers.
Sudharsan and Gill opened the innings for the hosts in trademark fashion as they stitched up a solid partnership.
Gill was the aggressor, with Sai holding anchor, as the GT skipper raced to his half-century in just 28 deliveries. The duo continued their onslaught to take the home team into triple figures before
the halfway point in the innings. Sudharsan kept ticking away at the other end to bring up his fifth fifty on the trot as Jos Buttler joined him at the crease after Gill was removed for 64 off 37 deliveries by Spencer Johnson gave his side the first breakthrough.
Sudharsan and Buttler put up a 84-run stand as the GT batters kept the Chennai bowlers under siege. The former fell to Anshul Kamboj after his masterful 84 off 53 deliveries before Gaikwad produced a brilliant bit of work on the field to get rid of Rahul Tewatia for a golden duck. Washington Sundar fell to Mukesh Choudhary for 7, as Buttler added an unbeaten 57 off 27 deliveries to take GT to a massive total of 229/4.
GT were off to a fiery start with the ball as Siraj struck on the very first ball to remove Sanju Samson, before Gaikwad fell to the Indian seamer for 16 off 6. Siraj tripled his tally with the removal of Urvil Patel as Prasidh Krishna completed a fine catch. Matt short added 24 runs off 14 balls before Rabada got his man.
Karthik Sharma added 19 runs in 15 deliveries but was undone by opposition skipper Gill’s piece of work on the field. Shiva Dube and Dewald Brevis put up a 53-runs stand as the southpaw put GT bowlers to the sword with a quick fire 47-run innings off just 17 deliveries with four fours and sixes each.
Gill, who could seemingly do no wrong on the day pulled off a stunning catch to remove Dube as Rashid Khan got in on the wickets. Anshul Kamboj added 19 off 8 before succumbing to the Afghan spinner. Rashid registered his three-fer with the wicket of Brevos for 8.
Rabada, too came in to pick up his three-fer with the wickets of Noor Ahmed and Spencer Johnson for 1 and 0 respectively to bundle out CSK for 140 runs in 13.4 overs as Chennai fell to one of their biggest defeats.
