McLaren boss Zak Brown has said that although his team needs to keep doing what they are doing, an eye needs to be kept on defending world champion Max Verstappen, who has registered two consecutive wins and is breathing down Lando Norris’ neck in the drivers’ championship.
At the Dutch Grand Prix last month, Norris couldn’t finish his race and Verstappen came second, just behind championship favourite Oscar Piastri.
Verstappen dominated both the Italian and Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while Piastri and Norris struggled throughout.
As a result, Verstappen has cut Piastri’s championship lead to 69 points. McLaren boss Brown acknowledged that the former’s pace is a real concern and the Dutch driver cannot be underestimated.
“I think you have got to pay
attention to Max. We have to keep doing what we are doing. The constructors’ championship is looking very good. We had a chance to wrap it up in Baku, but let us not talk back at Baku. Hopefully, we can get the job done in Singapore,” Brown said while speaking to Bloomberg.
The McLaren boss shared his ideal scenario, saying that he would love to see the title fight go down to the final race between Piastri and Norris.
“What we want to do is we want our two drivers and Max, but we would like to kind of get him out of there, to fight for the championship and just give them equal opportunity, equal equipment, which is what we are doing,” Brown said.
“May the best man win. That is what we want to do. We would like to not play a role, if at all possible. Lando had a mechanical failure at Zandvoort and things can happen, safety cars and things of that nature,” Brown added.
Verstappen has shone in the last two races, though both were on low-downforce tracks.
