Kerala will bid farewell to veteran Malayalam actor and filmmaker Sreenivasan with full police honours on Sunday, following the state government’s decision to accord ceremonial respect at his funeral.
The acclaimed artist died on Saturday at the age of 69.
According to officials, the final rites are scheduled for December 21 at Sreenivasan’s residence in Udayamperoor, Kandanad, in Ernakulam district. The state administration confirmed its decision through an official advisory issued by the Secretary to the Government, offering condolences and acknowledging his contributions to Malayalam cinema.
“Government have learnt with profound grief the demise of Shri Sreenivasan, renowned Malayalam actor, scriptwriter and filmmaker. He had won numerous awards, including a National Film Award (Best Film on Other Social Issues – Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala) and six Kerala State Film Awards,” the advisory said.
As part of the formal tribute, the District Collector has been instructed to lay wreaths on behalf of the state. The Commissioner of Police has also been directed to arrange ceremonial honours, including a bugle salute at the funeral.
Friends from the industry and political leaders joined fans in expressing grief over the loss. Actor and screenwriter Renji Panicker said Sreenivasan’s mortal remains would first be placed at his residence before being taken to the Town Hall for public homage, scheduled for 1 pm.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan paid tribute to the celebrated filmmaker, stressing the magnitude of the loss to Malayalam cinema. “The passing of Sreenivasan is an irreparable loss to Malayalam cinema. What we are losing is a talent who rose to leading positions across every domain of filmmaking. Very few filmmakers have succeeded, as he did, in bringing the life of the common man to the silver screen and in guiding the audience, through humour and reflection, to levels of awareness he intended. Sreenivasan stepped into cinema by breaking several long standing conventions,” he said in a statement issued by his office.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar also condoled the actor’s death. “His iconic performances and timeless contributions will be remembered forever. Condolences to his bereaved family. May his soul attain mukti.”
Several ministers and prominent cultural figures have joined in remembering Sreenivasan’s legacy, underscoring his decades-long influence as an actor, writer, director and producer.
