The spiritual festival of Navratri has brought home devotion for Maa Durga and the garba fervour all over India. Across different states, devotees have been worshipping the great goddess and dancing to the tunes of garba. In one such joyous moment, a group of women was spotted doing the traditional Navratri dance in a Mumbai local train.
A video from the ladies’ coach of a train passing by the Borivali- Churchgate AC route on Thursday, September 25, unveiled amusing scenes as these female commuters sang songs and did the Garba rounds. They perfectly matched their steps to the Gujarati folk songs echoing in the background before a few other passengers joined them in the fun, while other travellers cheered along.

All three original Garba performers wore yellow, the colour of the Navratri’s fourth day, reflecting their devotion of the goddess Kushmanda. The busy local trains in Mumbai are infamous on the internet for videos of accidents and ugly arguments among passengers. In a rare sight, a relatively free coach reverberated with the Gujarati folk songs and the beautiful vibe of Garba after these ladies started performing the traditional Navratri steps together.

It turned a regular train ride into a memorable moment for the Garba performing ladies as well as other commuters, who clapped on each of their steps and cheered them. The incident brought a smile to everyone’s face inside the local train and perfectly summed up the devotion, love and warmth people experience during the colourful festival of Navratri in different parts of India.
Navratri and Garba In Mumbai
The wonderful sight of women performing garba inside the local train also highlighted Mumbai’s unique nature as a city. Despite multiple challenges and regular struggles, the spirited Mumbaikars find a way to rejoice. The festivals are often the best time for Mumbai locals to shed their worries momentarily and take part in different festivities and rituals.
After grand celebrations during Ganesh Chaturthi, the Mumbaikars welcomed Maa Durga to their homes. During Navratri, societies across different parts of the city host attractive Durga pandals and organise the Garba in the evenings. Locals worship the goddess and have fun dancing to the folk songs before resuming the next day.
