Jim Parsons may have been one of television’s biggest stars during The Big Bang Theory, but behind the scenes, he says life wasn’t as fulfilling as it appeared. Speaking on the ‘All Out with Jon Dean’ podcast, the 53-year-old actor, who played Sheldon Cooper, reflected on his years on the hit sitcom which aired from 2007 to 2019, and admitted that even at the peak of his career, he was miserable and stressed. Despite his professional success, he remembers feeling constantly stressed and far from truly happy.
Jim Parsons On Being ‘Miserable’ Despite Big Bang Theory Fame
“I look back now and realise that there were many ways, at some of the best moments of my life, I was miserable. I was not happy. I was stressed,” said Jim Parsons, while speaking about the toll of starring in The Big Bang Theory.
He explained
that he put immense pressure on himself to keep everything running perfectly. At the time, he believed that the success he was enjoying was only possible because he worked relentlessly and maintained strict discipline.
“I felt that there was so many plates I was supposed to be keeping in the air and that the success and the good things of life that were happening were only due to this overworking… discipline and whatever. Maybe to a degree that was true. I don’t know. I can’t say because that’s how I was,” he added.
‘Wouldn’t Do It Again For Any Amount Of Money’: Jim Parsons
His acclaimed performance as Sheldon Cooper earned him numerous honours, but Parsons says the stress that came with it wasn’t worth it. “I wouldn’t do that again and for any amount of money … it was stressful and miserable at times. I made myself miserable,” he shared.
When host Jon Dean asked whether it was just due to his work ethic, Jim replied, “It translated in part into a work ethic, but it was really just obsessive behaviour basically. Yes, I was disciplined. Yes, I had a good work ethic, but a lot of it was because it was kind of OCD in nature.”
“I had a list of things basically in my head that I had to get done in order to be comfortable and know that I could do my job right, which I don’t think was true,” he said. Because he was so focused on work, he admits he missed out on many moments in his personal life, saying he lost ‘tons of life’ along the way.
Parsons said he does not regret that chapter of his life, acknowledging that the intense pressure he put on himself was also part of the journey that brought him to where he is today. “I wouldn’t be where I am right now if I hadn’t had that time of life and that somewhat self-tortured nature was part of it,” he said. He further added that he is learning to have a healthier relationship with the success the role brought him.
About The Big Bang Theory
Running for 12 seasons and a total of 279 episodes from 2007 to 2019, The Big Bang Theory became one of television’s most successful sitcoms. The series featured Jim Parsons alongside Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik.
The success of the sitcom later led to the spin-off Young Sheldon, which explored Sheldon’s childhood years. Parsons reprised his connection to the character by serving as the narrator and also making an on-screen appearance in the 2024 series finale.
