Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday announced a series of fuel-saving and cost-cutting measures across the state, urging citizens and government departments to align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for reduced fuel consumption amid global energy pressures due to the ongoing war in West Asia.
Adityanath called on people to reduce fuel use, adopt public transport, and avoid unnecessary gold purchases, stressing that the state must contribute to national efforts focused on conserving resources and foreign exchange.
Chairing a high-level meeting with the Chief Secretary, DGP, Additional Chief Secretaries and Principal Secretaries, he directed a 50 per cent reduction in the fleets used by the Chief Minister’s Office,
ministers and other senior officials. He also ordered the removal of unnecessary vehicles from official convoys.
Push For WFH And Virtual Meetings
The Chief Minister urged departments to prioritise work-from-home arrangements wherever possible. He also directed that meetings, seminars, conferences and workshops be conducted virtually to reduce travel and fuel consumption.
Officials have been asked to adopt hybrid working models, with advisory support for large workplaces to implement work-from-home for up to two days a week.
He further stressed the use of PNG, Metro services, buses of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, carpooling, cycling and electric vehicles. In cities with metro connectivity, citizens were encouraged to use it more frequently.
‘No Vehicle Day’ And Public Transport Use
Adityanath also suggested introducing a “No Vehicle Day” once a week and asked public representatives, including ministers, MPs and MLAs, to use public transport at least one day every week.
He said office timings could be staggered to ease peak-hour traffic and reduce fuel consumption.
The Chief Minister also appealed for reduced electricity usage, especially in government buildings and commercial establishments, and advised minimising decorative lighting after 10 pm.
He urged citizens to limit non-essential foreign travel for the next six months and encouraged domestic tourism instead. He also called for promotion of local products, natural farming, and reduced edible oil consumption as part of wider health and economic measures.
