A woman from Delhi has triggered discussion after sharing her late-night travel experience on the Mumbai Metro. In a short video posted on social media, she showed what her journey looked like around 12:10 am. People were chatting quietly, some were laughing after attending a concert, and others were simply heading home. What stood out for her was not the train, but how safe and relaxed she felt.
She explained that while growing up in Delhi, stepping out late at night always meant planning, worry and fear. Simple things like wearing what she liked or using public transport after 11 pm were never easy. In Mumbai, the feeling was very different. She noticed people keeping distance, minding their own work and behaving with respect, even in a crowded
station. For her, this organised atmosphere felt relaxing. She shared that moments like these made her feel confident about her decision to live in Mumbai, a feeling many viewers connected with.
Why Mumbai Metro Felt Safer Than Delhi
The post shared on Instagram came with the caption, “As a woman who grew up in Delhi, it made me so emotional to be in public transport post midnight wearing whatever I want and watching people be so civilised and mindful. I saw this group playing some game on their way back from a concert. I was at that concert and everyone was so organised and mindful at the very crowded metro station. In Delhi? I always had to plan, are my outfits okay? Can I take a cab post 11? I wouldn’t even consider the metro. Whenever I did, I hated the lack of personal space, the stares, that feeling of not being safe. Idk what it is about this city but I know for sure the people have made the decision to be here so worth it.”

Mixed Reactions From Social Media Users
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “Mumbai isn’t perfect, but moments like this show why people trust the city. Safe, chill, and let-you-be. Freedom shouldn’t have a curfew. Glad you felt safe, comfortable, and yourself. That’s how it should be.”
Another shared, “Even in Mumbai local trains, there are people and RPF soldiers in women’s coaches. I travelled at 12 am at night in the Mumbai local train and yes, it’s safe even on the platform. In this post, it’s not about city, it’s about people’s cooperation with each other in public space.”
“So true, girl I am a Delhite who stayed in Mumbai fr 10 years, and I made a decision to move back to delhi, its been 2 months m packing my bags again and m on my way back to Mumbai,” a comment read.
An individual stated, “Born and raised in Delhi, 28 years old, never once had an odd experience on the Delhi Metro. Lived 9 years in Mumbai as well. But sure, go off with the low effort rage bait captions if that’s what it takes to scrape a few more likes.”
Another mentioned, “Kuch bhi? I’ve travelled in the Delhi metro a number of times, all dressed up and still felt safe. Delhi Metro also has lady officers deployed at night. Also, the Delhi metro operates till 1-1:30 every day, unlike the Mumbai metro, which operates till late only on a few occasions like these concerts. Typical ‘Mumbai ko delhi se superior batake cool lagungi’ mindset.”
One more added, “I will always, always and forever feel much safer in Mumbai than
Delhi/Gurugram/Ghaziabad. There’s a HUGE culture shift you feel in how women exist in public spaces and are perceived. Even in my darest of outfits in Mumbai, in places that usually don’t see that crowd, despite the stares, my safety hasn’t been a concern. I don’t remember the last time a woman said that to me about living here in Delhi.”
In the comments section, the woman clarified that her post was not meant to start a fight between Mumbai and Delhi or compare their transport systems. She said that people can have different views based on their own lives and that is completely okay. Her only reason for posting was to talk about how safe she felt as a woman while travelling in Mumbai. She added that she lived in Delhi for 25 years and never had that same feeling. She also said that if others feel Delhi is safe for them, she respects that opinion and has no issue with it.
