US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and top members of the Trump administration arrived at the John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts for the premiere of “MELANIA”, a new documentary
about the sitting First Lady. The president displayed his trademark humour when asked whether he would be the same person today had he not met his wife.
The documentary offers rare behind-the-scenes access to the first lady, who has kept a low public profile following Trump’s return to the White House. Eminent personalities and tech leaders, including Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon MGM Studios head Mike Hopkins and documentary director Brett Ratner, also attended the event.
During the screening, a reporter asked Trump if he would be the same man he is today if he had not met his wife. “That’s an interesting question. I have got to be careful with that. He is asking me a very dangerous question,” the president said.
“I think she’s really been a great help. She’s done a great job: Very respected, very smart, very measured, very measured — sometimes when I’m not so measured,” Trump said about his wife.

His remarks came as Melania Trump’s documentary came under scrutiny for its massive budget of $40 million, whereas other documentaries typically get one-tenth of that budget, and another $35 million spent by Amazon for promotion and distribution. Critics say Amazon’s push for the documentary is the company’s attempt to ingratiate itself with President Trump.
Melania Trump is not just the focus of the film but also serves as a paid executive producer, giving her direct control over the footage used, the portrayal of events, and what is ultimately left out. Her advisers have confirmed that she played an active role in both the production and post-production process.
“I am deeply humbled to have been surrounded by an inspiring room of friends, family, and cultural iconoclasts at the White House last night,” Melania Trump posted on X. The president has himself described the film as “an unforgettable, behind-the-scenes, look at one of the most important events of our time.”
Amazon and the film’s director, Brett Ratner, have rejected suggestions that the studio bought and promoted the film to curry favour with the administration. “It wasn’t about getting rich,” Ratner told reporters at Thursday’s premiere. “I think the Trumps are wealthy and successful enough.”
The documentary screening drew sharp criticism from Democrats who questioned the president’s priorities hours after another fatal shooting in Minneapolis upended domestic politics and raised the possibility of a government shutdown, according to The Washington Post.
