Star India pacer Mohammed Siraj has said that Jasprit Bumrah has had a serious back injury and a big surgery in the past and if he had pushed himself to play the Oval Test, the injury could have aggravated and his entire career could have been jeopardised.
Bumrah remains at the centre of debate, whether he plays or rests. Even during the first Test against the Windies, his inclusion raised eyebrows. If there was any series where India could have rested him, it would have been the home Tests against the Windies, but the selection committee decided otherwise.
Yet, Bumrah has been rested for the ODI series against Australia. This reflects India’s focus on T20Is, with a T20 World Cup to defend at home next year. Still, choosing to play him in home Tests
but not in three ODIs against Australia has sparked divided opinions.
A similar situation unfolded two months ago in England, where Bumrah played three of the five Tests, sitting out the second Test at Edgbaston and the fifth at The Oval. The only two Tests India won were the ones he missed.
Bumrah faced criticism once again for skipping the series decider, but Siraj defended him, saying that his trusted ‘Jassi bhai‘ knows best what he is doing.
“Bumrah bhai does not worry about outside opinion. He had a serious back injury and a big surgery. Had he bowled in that match, one cannot say whether he would have bowled again or not if he had broken down,” Siraj said while speaking to The Indian Express.
“It is that serious. That injury is very sensitive. His bowling action is very difficult. He is such an important bowler for India and his availability is so important, from the Asia Cup to next year’s World Cup and so on,” Siraj added.
The star Indian pacer shone in Bumrah’s absence, playing match-winning roles in Edgbaston as well as at the Oval.
