Islamabad, Jun 27 (PTI) A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck northeast Afghanistan on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, with tremors felt across several cities in neighbouring Pakistan. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) measured the quake at magnitude 5.9, saying it struck at 6:35 pm local time. The epicentre was in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region at a depth of 178 km, the Dawn newspaper reported, quoting the PMD.
The USGS said the epicentre was 43 km south of the Jurm district in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province.
Tremors were felt in multiple cities of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Attock and Abbottabad, the report said.
The
Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said authorities were inspecting buildings in the affected areas for damage, and added that the provincial control room and district emergency centres remained operational round the clock.
Punjab Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmad said they did not receive any reports of damage or injury to anyone after the earthquake, the report said.
Apart from Afghanistan and Pakistan, tremors were also felt in parts of India. PTI GRS GRS GRS
