Star Australia batter David Warner, on Saturday, January 3, went past the likes of Abhishek and Rohit Sharma, and equalled ace India batter Virat Kohli’s tally of most T20 hundreds, after he smacked an unbeaten
130 for the Sydney Thunder against the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.
Warner registered the highest individual score of the BBL season, but it went in vain as Hobart, powered by Tim Ward and Mitch Owen, defeated the Thunder by six wickets.
Warner stayed unbeaten on 130 off 65 deliveries at Engie Stadium on Saturday, January 3, smashing nine sixes and 11 boundaries to propel Sydney Thunder to 205/4.
Most hundreds in T20s
Chris Gayle: 22
Babar Azam: 11
Rilee Rossouw: 9
Virat Kohli: 9
David Warner: 9
One more hundred will make Warner the batter with the third-most centuries in T20s.
Put in to bat first, Thunder found themselves on 0/2 on the second delivery of the match, before skipper Warner and wicketkeeper Sam Billings added 66 runs for the third wicket.
After Billings was dismissed by Nathan Ellis, Warner and Nic Maddinson added 95 runs for the fourth wicket. After the latter was retired out, Warner and Daniel Sams added 44 for the fifth wicket to take Thunder to a whopping 205/4.
Maddinson marked his return to the BBL after two years on the sidelines with a brilliant effort with the bat, retiring out during Sydney Thunder’s six-wicket defeat to the Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday night.
Amidst Warner’s record-breaking 130*, Maddinson retired out at the end of the 18th over, just two deliveries after his captain brought up a brilliant hundred.
In the chase, Ward and Owen built a match-winning 108-run opening partnership. After the latter was dismissed by Sams, Ward and Rehan Ahmed added 40 runs for the second wicket.
Hurricanes soon found themselves at 166/4 before Nikhil Chaudhary and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade added 44 runs for the fifth wicket to take their team past the big target.
