Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 at the BC Place Vancouver in their final Group B game of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to top the group with 7 points, as co-hosts Canada came in second with 4 points.
Ruben Vargas gave Switzerland the lead immediately after the half-time break, before Johan Manzambi doubled the Rossocrociati’s lead in the 57th minute. Canada’s Promise David netted in the 76th minute to set up a nervy finish but the Swiss held their nerve to retain the lead and see the game out to qualify to the knockouts as table toppers.
Bosnia and Herzegovina logged a 3-1 win over Qatar in the other fixture to finish third in the group and give themselves hope of qualifying for the knockouts as one of the eight best third placed teams.
Kerim Alajbegovic
put Bosnia ahead in the 29th minute of the game before Mahmud Abunada turned the ball into his own net shortly after as the Europeans doubled their lead.
Qatar chopped the deficit in half thanks to Hasan Al Haidos’ strike three minutes shy of the half-time break, but Ermin Mahmic struck after 80 minutes of play to put the game to bed.
The top two sides from each of the 12 groups secure progress to the knockouts, and will be joined by the top eight third-placed sides from across the board under the new format of the expanded World Cup.
