Punjab Health Scheme Records 12,467 Sepsis, Septic Shock Treatments Worth ₹51.58 Crore

Punjab’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) has recorded 12,467 treatments for sepsis and septic shock worth ₹51.58 crore till September 1, highlighting the serious medical and financial burden of a condition that can become life-threatening within hours.

Of the total treatments, 10,961 were for severe sepsis, involving expenditure of ₹44.33 crore, while 1,506 treatments for septic shock accounted for ₹7.25 crore.

Sepsis is the body’s extreme and potentially life-threatening response to an infection. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it can rapidly cause tissue damage, organ failure and death. Almost any infection can lead to sepsis, with infections affecting the lungs, urinary tract, skin and gastrointestinal

tract among the common causes.

Unlike a routine infection, sepsis occurs when the body’s response to an infection becomes dysregulated and begins damaging its own tissues and organs. In severe cases, blood pressure can fall sharply and blood flow to vital organs can become inadequate, leading to septic shock.

‘Sepsis Can Become Dangerous Within Hours’

Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh stressed the importance of recognising the condition early.

“Sepsis can become progressively more dangerous. When it leads to serious circulatory problems and inadequate blood flow to vital organs, the patient may progress to septic shock,” he said.

Patients suffering from septic shock may require intensive care, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, medicines to maintain blood pressure, oxygen or mechanical ventilation and, in some cases, treatment to support failing organs.

Such intensive treatment can quickly increase healthcare costs, making financial protection particularly important for families.

The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana provides eligible families with cashless health coverage of up to ₹10 lakh annually, helping reduce the financial burden of critical illnesses.

The scheme’s sepsis-related treatment figures underline the scale of that potential burden, particularly when patients require prolonged or intensive care.

Newborns Particularly Vulnerable

The risk can be especially serious among newborns, who can deteriorate rapidly after developing an infection.

Dr Shashi Kant Dhir, Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatrics at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, said even subtle changes in a newborn’s behaviour can be an important warning sign.

“In newborns, even a small change in behaviour can be an important warning sign,” he said, adding that premature and low-birth-weight babies can deteriorate within hours.

Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, feeling unusually cold and changes in breathing can indicate serious illness in a newborn and require urgent medical assessment.

Why Antibiotic Use Also Matters

Antibiotics are essential when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed, but inappropriate use can contribute to antimicrobial resistance.

Health experts caution against self-medication, using leftover antibiotics or stopping a prescribed course without medical advice, as these practices can make infections harder to treat.

The CDC lists confusion, difficulty breathing, extreme pain or discomfort, fever or unusually low body temperature, clammy skin and a rapid heart rate among warning signs associated with sepsis that require urgent medical attention.

The figures from Punjab’s health scheme highlight a two-fold challenge: sepsis requires rapid recognition and treatment, while the intensive care it can demand can impose a significant financial burden on families.

The key message for patients and caregivers remains straightforward — when someone with an infection suddenly becomes seriously unwell, seeking medical attention without delay can be critical.
