Key Stretch Of Indore Metro To Run Underground, State To Bear Rs 900-Crore Extra Cost: Mohan Yadav

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Sunday announced that a 3.3-km stretch of the Indore Metro passing through some of the city’s most densely populated residential and commercial areas will now be constructed underground instead of as an elevated corridor, in a bid to ease traffic congestion and address public concerns.

The decision, which will increase the overall project cost by an estimated Rs 900 crore, will see the additional expenditure borne entirely by the state government, the Chief Minister said after reviewing development projects in Indore, news agency PTI reported.

“We have decided that construction of a key section of the Metro rail line in the city will now be carried out underground. The decision has been taken keeping

in mind better traffic management, public convenience and the city’s development and aesthetics,” Yadav said as quoted by the news agency.

Officials said the underground section will run between Khajrana Square and the Indore railway station, a corridor previously planned as an elevated stretch. The area is heavily built-up, with dense housing and commercial establishments.

The original Indore Metro project envisages a 31.32-kilometre-long route at a proposed cost of Rs 7,500.8 crore. Construction has been underway since 2019, though progress has been slow in congested localities due to land, traffic and public resistance issues.

In a major urban planning announcement, the chief minister also said the Indore Metropolitan Area would be significantly expanded to cover nearly 14,000 square kilometres across western Madhya Pradesh. The proposed metropolitan region will include Indore city along with parts of Ujjain, Dewas, Dhar, Ratlam and Shajapur districts.

“Indore Metropolitan Area will be developed as a major national hub for trade, industry and tourism,” Yadav said, adding that coordinated regional planning would boost economic growth and infrastructure development.
