Jasprit Bumrah on Tuesday (December 9) became the second Indian to take 100 wickets in T20Is. However, the historic moment was marred by a controversy, stemming from a likely umpiring error.
It happened
in the 11th over of the second innings in the first T20I between India and South Africa at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. The Proteas were already reeling at 68/6 in the chase of 176, and Suryakumar Yadav brought his best bowler back to wrap things up.
Bumrah went with a heavy short ball outside off stump to Dewal Brevis, who miscued his hoick off a top-edge to Suryakumar at cover. The Indian team celebrated and Brevis, angry with himself, rushed off the field.
However, just when he was crossing the boundary line, a replay of Bumrah’s bowling follow-through was shown. It looked clear that no part of his foot was behind the crease for that ball, making it a no-ball.
However, the third umpire had failed to call it, and no action was taken after the replays were shown. It needs to be noted that the call was marginal and it could be the case that the third umpire, KN Anantha Padmanabhan, saw it and opined that it wasn’t a no-ball but the on-air commentators seemed to think otherwise, too. In either case, it would be considered officially as Bumrah’s 100th T20I wicket. He went on to take 101st only three balls later with Keshav Maharaj falling to him, too.
Only Arshdeep has more wickets for India than him — 107 in 69 matches at an average of 18.37. Bumrah reached there in 81 matches but with a better average of 17.91.
South Africa were suddenly at 70/8 and went to 74/10 in no time — their lowest-ever score in the format. It sealed a 101-run win for India, the biggest for them over the Proteas.
