Border (1997)
Border is one of the films that cemented Sunny Deol’s legacy in Bollywood. Directed by JP Dutta, the film, set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, achieved massive box office success.
Sunny Deol played the role of Major-turned-Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, who led the Indian army in the Longewala battle against Pakistan. Border’s cast includes Jackie Shroff, Anand
Bajwa aka Andy, Suniel Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, and Tabu.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha came out in 2001. Based on a story by Shaktimaan Talwar, the film starred Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead roles. The narrative follows Tara Singh, a Sikh trucker, who falls in love with Sakina, a Muslim woman. After their marriage, Sakina is forcefully taken back to Pakistan by her family.
Darr (1993)
Darr witnessed Shah Rukh Khan’s rise to superstardom. However, the movie also featured a very underrated performance by Sunny Deol, who played Sunil Malhotra, an Indian Navy officer. Malhotra is married to the beautiful Kiran (Juhi Chawla).
Shah Rukh Khan’s Rahul Mehra is obsessed with Kiran. He stalks her in the film. Darr saw Shah Rukh Khan square off against Sunny Deol over Juhi Chawla. Deol later said in an interview that he took exception to how the movie treated the villain. “My only issue with the film was that I did not know they would glorify the villain,” he said, per Hindustan Times.
Damini (1993)
Sunny Deol delivered his iconic “dhai kilo ka haath” dialogue in this movie. Deol plays a lawyer, Govind Srivastava, who helps Damini (Meenakshi Seshadri) bring justice to a rape victim.
Among others, the movie starred Rishi Kapoor and Amrish Puri. Sunny Deol won his second National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Damini. Deol described the movie as “a film that roared louder than words” on its 32nd anniversary.
Ghayal (1990)
Sunny Deol played Ajay Mehra, an amateur boxer, who is framed for the murder of his elder brother Ashok. It is a revenge story that sees Deol lock horns with Amrish Puri’s Balwant Rai. Deol won his first National Film Award for Ghayal.
Ghatak (1996)
With Ghatak, Sunny Deol established himself as an unparalleled action hero. In the film, Deol’s character Kashi Nath, who is a compassionate wrestler, leads a revolt against Danny Denzongpa’s Katya, a tyrannical gangster. Ghatak also starred Meenakshi Seshadri as Gauri, Deol’s love interest, and Amrish Puri.
Chup: Revenge of the Artist (2022)
The crime thriller film follows the story of IG Arvind Mathur (Sunny Deol), who must track down a Mumbai serial killer. The movie also stars Pooja Bhatt, Dulquer Salmaan, and Shreya Dhanwanthary.
