Why Is Jasprit Bumrah Not Playing Today's 3rd ODI Vs England?

Jasprit Bumrah has missed out on India’s playing 11 for the third ODI against England at Lord’s due to a knee injury. India captain Shubman Gill said Arshdeep Singh would replace him for the match.

Gill didn’t confirm the seriousness of Bumrah’s injury, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a more detailed update 15 minutes before the match.

“Jasprit Bumrah had an impact injury on his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff,” the board said. “He was not available for selection for the third ODI due to reactive swelling in his left knee.”

This comes as a huge relief. An ‘impact’ injury suggests that Bumrah probably has some pain in his knee, which is much better for India than a muscular issue.

Knee muscles are

especially vulnerable to long-term issues. Bumrah has a long injury history, which is why he’s very carefully measured by the Indian team management — to an extent that this series is Bumrah’s first ODI rubber since the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad.

Gill lost the toss and was asked to bowl first at Lord’s. He announced two changes in addition to Bumrah.

“We have got three changes. Boom misses out, he’s unavailable due to some knee injury. And so is Washington Sundar. (Shivam) Dube also misses out. KL (Rahul) comes in, Prince Yadav comes in, and Arshdeep comes back into the team.”

This meant that Kuldeep Yadav was left out, with India going with as many as four seamers.

“We think he (Arshdeep) is a great bowler, and we were looking for four seamers on this ground. We have seen in the middle overs, spinners don’t really offer much as compared to the fast bowlers.”
