A case report was published in the journal Neurology India in 2020 in relation to a patient who was found with a bullet in her brain following an examination at a hospital.
The patient is identified as a woman named Mrs. Zhao aged 67 years from the Hunan province who spent her entire life with this object in her brain without knowing about it.
This woman went to the hospital with minor symptoms of discomfort.
Following further investigation to diagnose what was causing her discomfort, imaging studies were carried out.
While doing this procedure, they noted the presence of an object made of metal in the skull of the patient.
They later established that this was a bullet.
The first question that was asked at this point was how the bullet had remained
there for such a long period of time.
The woman was asked about this, and she narrated to them an experience from when she was a child where she was hit by something on the head in an accident.
Back then, she did not think anything serious had happened.
All she got was basic treatment and made full recovery without any imaging procedures.
The bullet had thus gone undetected.
It was observed that she did not suffer any major neurological problems like memory loss, trouble talking or moving. In this particular incident, the bullet was lodged at one spot without causing any damage to important parts of the brain.
According to medical experts, these cases, although rare, occur.
Slow-moving projectiles may get embedded within the skull without affecting vital areas. In cases where there is neither blood loss nor infection and no increase in pressure, it becomes possible for the human body to adjust to the foreign body.
In this case, doctors felt that surgery might be dangerous.
The bullet was embedded in a delicate part of the brain, and extracting it could do more harm than good.
For this reason, doctors decided to monitor her condition instead of resorting to surgical intervention.
As far as symptoms are concerned, neurologists say that they vary depending upon the exact location of the projectile in question and its interaction with nearby brain tissues.
While some people develop serious problems, there are others who continue to live symptom free for many years.
Thanks to advances in medical imaging techniques, it has become possible to diagnose such conditions.
It is now possible to detect foreign objects in the human body through the use of CT scans and other such devices.
She was able to continue her normal activities following her diagnosis with continuous health checkups.
Her condition remains one of many illustrations of how well the human body is capable of adapting even to abnormal circumstances.
