Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay reshaped the political narrative in Tamil Nadu by becoming the Chief Minister on his political debut. Years ago, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth teased a political entry, banking on his enormous popularity, but that came to nought in 2020.
Days after Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai after days of political uncertainty, Rajinikanth was asked about his comments on the matter at the Chennai airport.
A video showed Rajinikanth arriving at the Chennai airport, when a reporter asked him about the news of Vijay becoming the chief minister. However, Rajinikanth offered no response. He simply smiled, folded his hands and walked away.

On May 4, when the TVK overshadowed both DMK and AIADMK in the election results, Rajinikanth congratulated Vijay for the massive feat. “My congratulations to Thiru Vijay, President of the victorious Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and to the members of his party, on their resounding victory in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections,” he wrote.

Since 1996, when Rajinikanth was at the peak of his career, he decided to make an entry in politics. In 2017, he said he would launch a new party, and it would contest in all 234 seats. However, after the DMK-led alliance swept Tamil Nadu’s seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the superstar dropped the idea of entering politics. In 2021, he decided to dissolve his Rajini Makkal Mandram (RMM) party, citing a health scare.
TVK, which created a record by winning 108 seats in its debut assembly polls, went on to amass the support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member assembly. Vijay joined the league of iconic actors-turned-leaders like MG Ramachandran, NT Rama Rao and Jayalalithaa.
On the film front, Rajinikanth was last seen in Coolie. He will next be seen in Jailer 2, alongside Kamal Hassan. The shooting of the second part of the film began in Chennai. Sun Pictures, the production house producing the action entertainer, had announced that shooting for the film had commenced on March 10 this year.
