Indian National Congress’s media in-charge, Pawan Khera, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for having a tricolored handkerchief in his jacket’s pocket, but in reverse. His comments have come after PM Modi delivered his speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
The Congress leader took a jibe, in a post on X, at the Prime Minister saying, “Lagta hai sahib ne Urdu mein Tiranga pehna hai (seems like the lord has worn the tricolour in Urdu).”
Urdu is a language that is written from right to left. While, Hindi, English, and most other vernacular languages in India are written from left to right.
Khera also gave an alternate explanation for this reversed tricolour. He said, “or it could be that instead of India’s, Ireland’s independence day is being
celebrated.”
Ireland’s flag also bears the tricolour combination of saffron, white, and green like India. Except, the European nation’s flag has the colours arranged vertically, starting from green instead of saffron like India’s.
Other Congress Leaders’ Reactions
Meanwhile, the Congress member of Parliament, Jebi Mather, questioned the seriousness of Prime Minister’s intention on implementing the women’s reservation in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. She also alluded that under the garb of this, the Bharatiya Janata Party actually wants to push delimitation, which many in the southern states have alleged to be problematic for them.
“If PM Modi and his govt are serious about women’s reservation, it should have been implemented by now. It has not been implemented yet because they have their own agenda. They want to get delimitation done under the garb of the women’s reservation bill. This is not acceptable. Congress is the party that brought women’s reservation,” she said, as quoted by ANI.
In 2010, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had introduced a bill for women’s reservation and had got it passed in the Rajya Sabha. However, the bill then lapsed in the Lok Sabha.
Another senior Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh also took a potshot at the Prime Minister for the latter’s ‘dimaagi naxals’ remark.
“It is a sure sign of His desperation. It is a separate matter that He ends up doing whatever these so-called ‘urban naxals’ or now ‘dimaagi naxals’ are demanding or advocating,” Ramesh said in a post on X.
He described the Prime Minister as “Master Abuser in Entire Political Science”. A certificate often does the rounds of social media, where it is claimed that it is PM Modi’s Masters degree, which says the holder has an MA in ‘entire political science’.
What Did The PM Say
In his speech, which apparently is his shortest Independence Day speech in four years, the Prime Minister touched upon several important issues for the country. These included the women’s reservation and the remark on left wing extremism.
“Earnestly” appealing to the political parties of the country, the PM said, “Step forward in honour of our women, and as swiftly as possible, ensure our mothers and sisters receive 33% representation in the State Legislative Assemblies and the Lok Sabha so that they can actively contribute to shaping India’s policies.”
On left wing extremism, he said, “we need to identify these dimagi naxal, isolate them, and bring the youth together for a developed country.”
