Several Labourers Feared Trapped After Stone Quarry Collapses In UP's Sonbhadra

Several labourers were feared trapped under the debris after a portion of a stone quarry collapsed and caved in during mining in Billi Markundi village in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district on Saturday.

The incident took place when a wall inside the Krishna Mines quarry suddenly caved in, trapping the workers, District Magistrate B N Singh said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

“We have received information that some people are feared trapped under the debris of a collapsed wall in a stone quarry. We are present at the spot, and a rescue operation is underway. NDRF and SDRF teams are on their way… An investigation will be conducted to determine the reason behind this,” he said.

He said that, however, the exact number of people trapped is still unknown.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have left Mirzapur to carry out rescue operations at the site, officials said.

As per local media reports, the incident took place 5 km away from the venue of a programme attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. According to media reports, there were instructions to stop the mining activity in view of the programme, but the operations continued, defying the order.
