Venezuela was rocked by two back-to-back powerful earthquakes on Wednesday, June 24, triggering panic and causing heavy damage in the capital of Caracas. The twin tremors, among the strongest to strike the South American nation in over a century, led to loss of lives and devastation of homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck shortly after 6 PM local time, with its epicentre off the Caribbean coast near Moron. Barely 40 seconds later, a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake struck at a shallower depth near Montalban, a region that houses some of the country’s largest oil refineries.
Visuals of the devastation caused by the powerful earthquakes
have surfaced on social media, showing the extent of the damage in Caracas and other areas. A video shared on X captured the aftermath of the earthquakes in what appeared to be a residential area lined with high-rise buildings. As the camera moved along, a multi-story building was seen partially collapsed, with large sections of concrete reduced to rubble. Some people gathered outside the building.
