Many individuals pursue their master’s degree abroad. Living in a new country and exploring the culture is an experience in itself. Apart from the adventure, studying overseas often opens the doors to better career opportunities, global networking, and personal growth. However, sometimes, people give up the dream due to family responsibilities, love for their country and the dread of adjusting in a new land. But is it the right decision?
Recently, an IIT graduate weighed in on the matter, highlighting why they deeply “regret” choosing to stay back in India. The Bengaluru-based individual shared an elaborate note on Reddit, admitting how the decision led to his “abysmal” life. The person began his write-up by sharing, “I am a 2021 graduate from
IIT. I got into FAANG, and I felt I should stay back close to family and help my country.”
The post revealed that Redditor’s friends had all moved to the US and earned their master’s degree from Tier III colleges. This enabled them to save more in a month than the individual did in a year in Bangalore. Slamming the metro city, the person wrote, “It’s literally a sh** hole. Garbage and traffic everywhere. My quality of life feels abysmal. I regret not going abroad and doing a Master’s. India won’t develop in our lifetime.”
On a concluding note, the IIT graduate urged everyone to settle abroad when an opportunity knocks, claiming that staying back would only result in regret afterwards.

Internet Responded With A Mixed Bag Of Opinions
“I think there are pros and cons to everything. If you go abroad, you will benefit from higher wages, better infrastructure and cleaner air. If you stay in India, you don’t need to adapt to a new culture and your family members are always around you,” pointed out a user.
“You are what, 25-26? You can still do it,” encouraged another.
“When you get to a foreign country, you will start regretting not being around your family, culture, and food. Start appreciating what you have; constantly living in regrets is a miserable way to live,” advised one person.
An NRI, however, supported the Redditor’s stance. They opined, “India is overrated. I’ve been staying from 15+yr in the US and not for once do I feel like going back. Every year, I travel for vacation and come back disappointed. It’s all hype, roads, infrastructure are not gonna help if ‘civic sense, pollution, AQI, corruption, pop control’ is not dealt with. People simply don’t trust each other. Every person is trying to fool the next one.”
They admitted to living in Mumbai for years, slamming the “same crowded” and suffocating local trains, lacking proper maintenance and infrastructure.
