Bengaluru Metro commuters may soon find significant relief from the daily struggles of parking, with multi-level parking complexes likely to come up at select stations across the city.
The Greater Bengaluru
Authority (GBA) has unveiled ambitious plans to construct modern multi-level parking at select Metro stations.
This major initiative aims not only to tackle persistent parking shortages but also to enhance traffic management and security around busy Metro corridors. It will also address the long-pending demand of resolving the current system, which relies on private contractors who use vacant land as informal parking areas.
While these makeshift arrangements offer limited convenience, they frequently lead to problems such as poor space management, inadequate security, and inconsistent facilities across stations. To resolve these issues, the GBA has decided to take direct charge of developing high-tech, organised parking structures.
The shift to structured parking promises substantial improvements for commuters and city infrastructure. The proposed multi-level facilities are expected to significantly increase parking capacity at Metro stations, allowing more vehicles to be accommodated within a smaller footprint.
It is anticipated to reduce roadside congestion and provide safer parking options for commuters’ vehicles. According to officials, improved parking will contribute to smoother traffic flow around busy Metro corridors and enhance safety for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Reports said GBA chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to prepare a detailed list of Metro stations suitable for the construction of these parking complexes. The decision was made at a recent coordination meeting, which included significant multi-agency participation. Officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), the Bengaluru police commissioner, and commissioners from five city municipal corporations met to discuss the proposal.
For years, commuters have expressed a strong need for structured parking at Bengaluru Metro stations, although prior discussions had yielded no concrete results. With the latest directive to identify suitable locations, this long-awaited project may soon come to fruition bringing much-needed relief to daily commuters across the city.
