Ballia (UP), Nov 1 (PTI) A 25-year-old woman died following childbirth here, prompting police to register a case of culpable homicide against an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM), who was arrested on Sunday, officials said.
According to the complainant Naseem, his wife Shabina Khatoon died due to excessive bleeding allegedly after the ANM did not let him take her to a hospital following complications during childbirth.
The case was registered at Bairia police station on Saturday based on a complaint filed by Naseem, a resident of Mun Chhapra village, against ANM Lakshmi Devi under Section 105 (culpable homicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the police said.
Naseem said that he took his pregnant wife, Shabina Khatoon, to Lakshmi Devi’s residence
in Bibi Tola village for delivery on October 30. The ANM allegedly assured him that she would oversee the delivery at her home and charged Rs 15,000 for the service.
As his wife continued to experience severe labour pain, Naseem allegedly requested Lakshmi Devi to let her take her to a hospital. However, the ANM did not allow this, the complaint alleged.
Shabina delivered a baby boy in the early hours of October 31, but her condition deteriorated due to excessive bleeding.
She died on the way while her husband was taking her to Ballia for medical treatment, police said.
Following her death, family members gathered at the ANM’s residence and created a commotion. Police reached the spot and pacified the agitated relatives.
Bairia SHO Rajendra Prasad Singh said the woman’s body had been sent for post-mortem examination.
A named case was registered against Lakshmi Devi, and she was arrested on Sunday, the officer said. PTI COR ABN SMV RT
