An Indian engineer who travelled to Russia for a project linked to a Noida-based company has allegedly been arrested by Moscow police, with his wife claiming he was wrongfully detained over an alleged attempt to enlist in the Russian Army.
Chandan Gupta’s wife, Sneha Gupta, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for help through a social media video. She alleged that her husband was “trapped” in a case and has been put in jail.
According to CNN News18 sources in the government, Chandan Gupta, an employee of Flex Films Rus LLC, local subsidiary of Indian company Flex Films along with a friend Ashish were detained by the Moscow police around 11.30 pm on Saturday 5 September in Red Square premises
on charges of drunkenness and breaking glasses of an ambulance nearby. They are currently detained in Baumanskaya police station, Moscow.
Embassy has raised the matter with local authorities and requested for releasing them. Meanwhile, Consular access has also been sought. “Embassy is in contact with Sneha Gupta, spouse of Chandan Gupta,” the government source added.
Russian Embassy Responds
Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy has acknowledged the matter and said it was in touch with Gupta’s wife and local authorities.
The Russian Embassy said local authorities were looking into the matter as a legal issue. The embassy also said it was in contact with Gupta and the local authorities and had sought consular access.
“We have seen a social media post by an Indian national regarding her husband,” the embassy said, adding that it was “in touch with her and the local authorities in the matter”.
The embassy said that, according to law enforcement authorities, it was a legal matter and that they were looking into it. It also confirmed that the embassy had sought consular access. “As per law enforcement authorities, it is a legal matter and they are looking into it. What Wife Said In Video?
According to Sneha Gupta, her husband works for an Indian company based in Sector 62, Noida. She said Chandan is an engineer and that they were living in Russia on a highly qualified visa after travelling there through the company, through Flex.
She said the family’s address is in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
“I appeal to the Honourable Chief Minister, Yogi ji, that the police here took my husband away at around 12.30 am at night,” she said in the video.
Gupta alleged that her husband had done nothing wrong and was taken away by the police. She said he was later harassed and “trapped” in a case before being put in jail.
“They are not releasing him,” she said, appealing to the Chief Minister to intervene and help secure her husband’s release.

She also spoke about the difficulties she is facing in Russia following her husband’s arrest. “I do not know the local language, and I have my ten-year-old child with me,” she said.
“How are we supposed to leave this place? Please help my husband and get him released,” she appealed.
She alleged that people in Russia were being forcibly sent to the Russian Army, claiming there was a shortage of personnel in the army.
Sneha Gupta alleged that people were being trapped and sent away without their families knowing where they were being taken.
