Bengaluru’s landmark double-decker flyover connecting Central Silk Board to Ragigudda is set to become fully operational by March, offering long-awaited relief to commuters navigating one of the city’s most congested corridors. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), which is executing the project, confirmed that the final stretch between HSR Layout and BTM Layout is expected to be completed by February.
According to BMRCL, construction is progressing ahead of schedule. Chief Public Relations Officer BL Yeshwanth Chavan said the remaining work would be completed by February, after which the elevated road would be opened to the public in consultation with the traffic police.
The project has already been partially commissioned. In
July 2024, BMRCL opened the 5-kilometre stretch from Ragigudda to Silk Board, including a crucial ramp over the busy Silk Board junction. However, the opposite carriageway from Silk Board to Ragigudda remained closed due to delays caused by design changes, approvals from traffic authorities, and challenges during girder launching. The project, which was originally scheduled for completion in December 2025, has now been advanced significantly.
Once the remaining section is opened, motorists travelling from HSR Layout towards BTM Layout and Ragigudda are expected to benefit from smoother connectivity. Officials anticipate that the full commissioning of the flyover will ease the chronic traffic congestion at Silk Board, long regarded as one of Bengaluru’s most notorious bottlenecks.
Traffic police have already reported improvements following the partial opening. Vehicle movement beneath the flyover has become smoother, as traffic from HSR Layout and Hosur Road has shifted to the elevated corridor. However, officials noted that traffic signals at the Silk Board junction will continue to operate for vehicles heading towards Madiwala and other adjoining areas.
The double-decker flyover is part of the Yellow Line Metro project and was necessitated by the demolition of the Jayadeva flyover to make way for an interchange station. Construction began in 2019 but faced multiple delays over the years. During the prolonged pause, residents were known to use sections of the unopened structure informally for jogging and morning walks.
While congestion at Silk Board is expected to reduce, authorities have cautioned that traffic could be diverted towards Marenahalli Road near the Ragigudda Metro station, as well as Banashankari Road, Kanakapura Road and parts of JP Nagar. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had earlier proposed an underpass near Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt to manage traffic in the area, a plan that may gain renewed attention once the flyover becomes fully operational.
