Hardik Pandya, who is the captain of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, and Suryakumar Yadav, who is Hardik’s deputy at MI, are not playing for the Mumbai-based franchise in their IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings on Thursday, May 14. While Hardik is not available for selection due to back spasms, Surya is missing the match due to personal reasons.

The ongoing match in Dharamsala is Bumrah’s first IPL match as captain of the Mumbai Indians. He has been associated with MI in the IPL since 2013 but never captained the side in the past 13 seasons.
He is the 10th player to captain Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
Prior to making his debut as captain in the IPL, Bumrah has led India in two T20Is and three Test matches.
He made his T20I captaincy debut for India against Ireland in August 2023, and his first Test as India captain was against England in Birmingham from July 1 to 5 in 2022. He also captained India in a couple of Test matches against Australia in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
