A NASA astronaut has amazed fans by sharing a stunning video of northern lights glowing above North America from the International Space Station (ISS). The clip was filmed by Jonny Kim, a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy, through the ISS window. In the video, the main attraction is the green aurora glowing on the planet’s edge. As the ISS moves forward, the aurora looks like it’s shimmering and rising.
Another orange light is also visible nearby the ground, which the astronaut points out are wildfires burning in Calgary, Canada.

Astronauts Adjust Sleeping Plans Due To Solar Storms
As per Space.com, the astronauts on the International Space Station for the ISS Expedition 73, had to change some of their sleeping plans because of recent solar storms that increased radiation levels. To stay safe, the three Russian cosmonauts, Oleg Platonov, Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky were asked to spend a night in the ISS laboratory module. The decision was made to be extra careful while the crew experienced higher than normal radiation caused by the solar activity.
The expedition, which started on April 19, 2025, includes Russian crew members Platonov, Ryzhikov and Zubritsky, along with NASA astronauts Mike Fincke, Jonny Kim and Zena Cardman. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Kimiya Yui is also part of the team. They will all stay aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft until December.
