When this tri-series started, India were considered to be overwhelming favorites. Most of their batting stars had come fresh out of a successful IPL season, with a captain who won the 2026 T20 World Cup, while Sri Lanka and Afghanistan were mostly made of players seen on the fringes of international cricket.
But Tilak Varma and his team have been given a strong wakeup call, with two huge losses against each of those opponents. The dramatic, highly controversial defeat to Sri Lanka would have been quite
a humbling experience for the visitors, who fought to have a Super-Over in bad light, only to lose it.
Had the points been shared, India would have only needed to beat Afghanistan to qualify for the final. But now, they’ll also be reliant on Afghanistan not beating Sri Lanka by a huge margin in the final game.
But, as always, India would be better served by focusing on this match, for Afghanistan beat them convincingly last time around. All eyes will be on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, naturally, but it’s high time the likes of Tilak, Priyansh Arya, and most of the bowling attack step up to the task.
