For decades, marrying a non-resident Indian (NRI), particularly someone settled in the US, Canada or Europe, was considered a dream match for many Indian families. An overseas job, foreign citizenship prospects and the promise of better facilities and lifestyle often made NRI grooms highly sought after. But that perception appears to be shifting nowadays.
Taking to Reddit, an individual asked, “Is it becoming difficult for NRI guys to find a match in India?” after noticing that it had become harder for NRIs to find a match in India. They said that they have noticed the trend among several people in their social circle, where NRI men, who had stable careers and genuine intentions of marriage, were rejected by Indian women and their families based
on certain assumptions.
“I have noticed this happening with a few people in my circle. Even when an NRI guy has a stable career and genuinely wants to marry someone from India, he often gets rejected because of assumptions like: NRI guys aren’t loyal.
He’ll have plenty of options abroad. He’ll change after marriage. He must be in a live-in relationship and will scam people in India. Life overseas will be lonely or difficult,” the individual wrote in the post.
“I’m curious whether this is becoming a common perception or if it’s just my social circle. For those who are looking for a match or have gone through the process, have you faced similar reactions?” they added.
“The Risk Is Not Worth It”
The post garnered significant attention, with many women saying they were unwilling to sacrifice their established careers and financial independence for an uncertain future abroad. Others pointed out that such relocation often comes with lengthy visa processes and social isolation.
“Why would any woman with a good career and social life here in India leave everything and move abroad for you, and also be on a dependent visa? People move countries for their love, not for any AM match whom they barely know; the risk is not worth it,” wrote a user.
Another person said, “Also, for financially stable women, who is leaving her stable job here just to be a housewife there, if she isn’t able to get a job, why would she?”
An individual explained, “Think it might also be about the convenience; in India if one is relatively prosperous then he/she can afford a maid/cook easily if not a driver etc all this becomes prohibitively expensive in the West even if you have a decent income. Living in a good gated community with, say, WFH will give you a better standard of living than most places in the West.”
Meanwhile, someone else said, “Crazy no of stories that I heard from friends, relatives and some personal stories here on Reddit and Insta are enough to avoid most NRI men. Anyhow, it’s hard to find genuine ppl these days.”
