When Vijay Varma walked back onto screens with Gustaakh Ishq, fans were quick to notice the long quiet spell before its release. For an actor who once had a new project dropping every few months, the pause
felt unusually long. But Vijay, in a chat with HT, said the gap wasn’t about work drying up — it was the constant spotlight on his personal life that made him step away.
He admitted the attention around him had stopped being about his craft. Much like the recent conversations sparked by Jaya Bachchan on intrusive pap culture, Vijay said the noise around him became overwhelming. “The work wasn’t coming out, so the conversation was about everything else,” he said, referring to the period when his relationship with Tamannaah Bhatia dominated headlines.
Vijay explained that he wanted stillness, but fame didn’t allow any. “I would have liked complete silence but that’s not possible,” he said, adding that even though he avoided press interactions for more than a year, the spotlight never left him. “I have not spoken to the press since IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, not given a single interview, yet the presence is all over and it’s beyond my control. But this is something that this generation is going to suffer from unless you live in a cave. Your decisions and your lives are being scrutinised every single day, so that’s how it is. I did need a gap, I needed more silence. But that’s something I didn’t have any control over.”
As he returned with Gustaakh Ishq, many began calling this his “lover boy” era. Vijay finds the label funny but said it may have grown out of how viewers perceived him during his much-talked-about relationship. “I feel it was a byproduct of being in the spotlight for being in a public relationship. People saw me in a certain way,” he says.
Reports of Tamannaah Bhatia and Vijay Varma’s breakup surfaced in March this year. They reportedly parted ways after dating for over two years. Back then, a source told Pinkvilla, “Tamannaah Bhatia and Vijay Varma parted ways weeks ago as a couple but they plan to remain good friends. Both have been working hard in their respective schedules.” They starred together in Sujoy’s Ghosh’s segment in Netflix’s ‘Lust Stories 2’, which premiered in June 2023.
