Bhubaneswar, Sep 7 (PTI) Three people were arrested in the Odisha capital for allegedly duping a private firm of Rs 5 lakh, a police officer said on Monday.
The arrested accused persons have been identified as Jitendra Kumar Khuntia (33), Rajesh Kumar Jena (34), and Purushottam Behera (35), all from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, he said.
The accused were arrested on Sunday and produced before a court on Monday, the officer said.
The fraudsters posed as the managing director of a Bhubaneswar-based event management company and sent fraudulent payment instructions to a senior functionary of the firm through WhatsApp on August 14.
Assuming it was genuine, the senior staffer transferred Rs 5 lakh from the company’s bank account to a beneficiary account. Soon
payment orders for Rs 10 lakh came from the same number, which aroused suspicion, and the company staffers confirmed that the MD had not authorised such transactions and that it was a fraud, the officer said.
The director of the company concerned lodged a complainant at the Cybercrime police station here on August 17 and after thorough investigation, the police arrested the trio, he added. PTI BBM BBM ACD
