Hapur, Jun 13 (PTI) A statue of Dr B R Ambedkar was allegedly vandalised by unidentified miscreants in a village here, triggering resentment among residents, police said on Saturday.
According to police, the incident took place late Friday night in Ghunghrala village under the Hafizpur police station area. Villagers discovered the damaged statue on Saturday morning and immediately informed the police.
A police team reached the spot soon after receiving the information and assessed the situation. Officials also interacted with villagers and assured them of a fair investigation.
Circle Officer Anita Chauhan said some miscreants had damaged the statue and that arrangements would be made to reinstall it.
She said police were examining footage from CCTV
cameras installed in the vicinity to identify those involved. Other evidence was also being collected as part of the investigation.
“Strict action will be taken against the accused once they are identified,” Chauhan said.
Police personnel have been deployed in the village to maintain law and order. Authorities have appealed to residents not to pay heed to rumours and to maintain peace, officials said. PTI COR CDN APL APL
