The US and Iran will sign their peace agreement in person at the Burgenstock Resort near Lucerne in Switzerland on Friday (June 19).
The agreement, aimed at ending the war in West Asia and earlier reported to be signed in Geneva, has now been confirmed at the Swiss mountainside resort above Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland, about an hour from Zurich.
A Swiss foreign ministry spokesperson told AFP that the resort’s location was proposed by mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, as well as by the US and Iran, due to its remote access and ease of securing.
“Switzerland is acting as a facilitator in this process, creating the practical and diplomatic conditions necessary for this meeting to take place on Swiss territory,” the official said.
The agreement,
a memorandum of understanding, was first signed electronically on Sunday after Tehran and Washington announced the deal aimed at ending the conflict, which began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran and has since engulfed the Middle East.
Iran has confirmed that its top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, will attend the in-person signing ceremony. From the US side, Vice President JD Vance will represent Washington, while President Donald Trump may also attend, though this has not yet been confirmed.
The full text of the agreement has not been released, creating uncertainty about the exact terms reached after lengthy negotiations to end the conflict.
The two sides were sharply divided over key issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions, and access to the Strait of Hormuz.
