After scoring 190 runs in the first innings of the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Durban, Australian batter Matt Renshaw scored 82 as a No. 5 batter in the second innings on Monday (October 12). He then dismissed South Africa captain Temba Bavuma in the third session on Day 4 to put his side on the cusp of a historic win.
Renshaw, who became the first player to score 150 runs in a World Test Championship match against South Africa on their home soil on Saturday (October 10), bowled the 30th over of the Proteas’ second innings at Kingsmead on Monday and dismissed Bavuma off the fifth ball. The right-handed batter was caught by Nic Maddinson after scoring just one run off 18 balls.

Bavuma was the third South African batter to be dismissed in the 421-run chase on Day 4.
The wicket of Bavuma in the third session on Monday was Renshaw’s first in Test cricket. The 30-year-old has taken nine wickets in 15 ODIs and three in nine T20Is for Australia but had failed to dismiss a batter in his first 15 Test appearances.
South Africa had high expectations from Bavuma in the second innings, but the right-handed batter, who led the Proteas to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title in 2025, failed to make a significant contribution.
After Bavuma’s dismissal, Australia captain Pat Cummins picked up the wicket of Tristan Stubbs, who was sent back to the pavilion for just one run off 12 balls. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey completed the catch on the fourth ball of the 34th over.
South Africa need 319 more runs to win
In reply to the target of 421 runs, South Africa finished the fourth day’s play at 102/4. The Proteas need 319 more runs on Tuesday to secure a historic win over the world No. 1 Test team.
If South Africa suffer defeat, it will be their first loss under Bavuma’s captaincy. Bavuma has led South Africa in 12 Tests so far, securing 11 wins, while the remaining match ended in a draw.
