James Pickens Jr has confirmed he is cancer-free, sharing the personal milestone while urging others—particularly Black men—to stay proactive about prostate health. The Grey’s Anatomy actor revealed his
recovery after completing treatment for prostate cancer, a diagnosis he has chosen to speak about openly in recent months.
His announcement followed a message aired at the end of Thursday’s episode of the long-running medical drama. In the televised PSA, Pickens Jr highlighted the value of early testing, stating, “I’m living proof that early detection works.” The clip was aimed at viewers who may be at heightened risk and encouraged them to prioritise routine screenings.

He later posted the same message online, linking audiences to Black Health Matters, where he discussed his medical journey in greater depth. The actor has used both platforms to address the topic directly, hoping his experience will offer clarity and reassurance to others navigating similar concerns.
In his conversation with Black Health Matters, Pickens Jr recounted how rising PSA levels prompted further testing. “I went back in January, and when my PSA numbers came back, my primary said, ‘Yeah, you know what? It’s ticked up some more. I want to send you back to the urologist,’” he said. The follow-up examination led to an MRI that showed “something suspicious,” and a biopsy later confirmed a tumour.
A PET scan subsequently determined that the cancer was confined to one area of the prostate and had not advanced beyond it, according to the health platform. Pickens Jr also reflected on his family’s medical history, noting a pattern that heightened his own risk. “It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family. My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it,” he told the outlet.
Once his treatment concluded, the actor shared an update with his fans. “‘Hi Friends, I’m blessed and grateful to be cancer-free. Thanks so much for all the love and support! Get checked!'” he wrote, underscoring the message he has repeated throughout his public statements.
His disclosure comes as Grey’s Anatomy explores a parallel storyline involving his character, Dr Richard Webber, who is also faced with a cancer diagnosis. By speaking candidly about his own experience, Pickens Jr has sought to reinforce the importance of early detection and regular medical evaluations.
