Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma Joins India's EV Elite With Tesla Model Y Purchase

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder and CEO of Paytm, has joined the early list of Indian owners of Tesla after taking delivery of a Glacier Blue Tesla Model Y from the newly inaugurated Tesla Centre in Gurugram this week.

Photos of the handover, conducted by Tesla India head Sharad Agarwal, quickly surfaced on social media, even though Sharma made no official announcement about the delivery.

The moment carries special significance for Sharma, who was among the earliest Indians to reserve a Tesla, having booked a Model 3 as far back as 2016—years before the American EV maker formally entered the Indian market.

Tesla Model Y: Price and Key Specifications

Tesla is offering the Model Y in two rear-wheel-drive variants in India:

• Base RWD: Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), powered by a 64 kWh battery with a claimed range of 500 km
• Long Range RWD: Rs 67.89 lakh, featuring an 84.2 kWh battery and a claimed range of 661 km

Both variants come equipped with Tesla’s minimalist interior layout, a large

central touchscreen, panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control and advanced driver-assistance systems.

Tesla’s India Footprint Expands

Tesla’s first full-scale integrated facility in India—covering retail, service, test drives, deliveries and charging—was inaugurated on November 26 at Orchid Business Park in Gurugram. Since bookings opened in mid-July, Tesla has reportedly delivered around 140 vehicles.

Following its official entry in July, Tesla has steadily expanded its offline presence through experience centres in Mumbai and Delhi, along with a growing charging network. The company currently operates three charging stations and is preparing to commission a fourth at One Horizon, Gurugram. Once fully operational, the network will comprise 16 Superchargers and 10 Destination Chargers. Tesla claims its Supercharging system can add up to 275 km of driving range in just 15 minutes.

At the Gurugram facility’s inauguration, the Haryana Chief Minister highlighted the state’s rise as a major automotive and technology hub, citing strong connectivity, the KMP Global Corridor and over 12 lakh small industries. He also pointed to eased regulatory processes and rapid expansion across mobile, automobile and agricultural vehicle manufacturing.
